RHS STUDENTS PRESENTED AT AUTHORS IN APRIL
Mrs. Kuslits’ L9 Honors freshmen took the Authors in April challenge seriously by coming prepared to speech tryouts in March once this annual event promoting the love of reading was announced. The candidates first had to deliver a two-minute audition speech before the panel, reflecting on their fondness for reading and memories of Authors in April during their K-8 years. So many qualified students applied from the three Honors classes, it was hard for the selection committee to decide, but four were finally chosen and paired up with these beloved authors:
Leona Falconer presented K-1 author Mike Wohnoutka, Kethan Gudi presented 2nd & 3rd grade author Lenore Look, Olivia Lockhart presented the 4th & 5th grade author Cynthia Lord, and Anu Yetukuri presented the Middle School author Neal Shusterman.
Before the banquet at the Royal Park Hotel on Sunday, the four Falcon presenters were treated to a dinner at the Meeting House where they were introduced to the writers. This allowed them to ask their authors questions that they could then use in their introductions the next day. Then it was on to the big night of the Authors in April banquet at the Royal Park Hotel where before a crowd of over 400, the four freshmen had their moment in the spotlight . Audience members gave them a warm reception with cheers, laughter, and rounds of applause as they finished their speeches. All four students agreed that the time spent on writing and rehearsing was well worth the thrill of getting to meet nationally acclaimed authors and the privilege of introducing them at the banquet.
The accomplishment was also noted by event organizers because it was the first time all ninth-graders were selected as presenters, and all from one school. What an impressive way to represent Rochester High!
This incredible experience is open to any high school student in the district, so think about auditioning next March, especially if you love reading. Again, congratulations Kethan, Leona, Anu, and Olivia.

FEDS AT THE WORLD ROBOTICS CHAMPIONSHIP
During their second competition in Howell, through a contentious battle, the FEDS brought home the gold when they won the entire competition with their three alliance partners. Their amazing performance, in the end, won them not only the competition, but also their second Gracious Professionalism award. The FEDS’ triumph was rewarded with their first winner’s blue banner since 2011. With that, they earned enough ranking points to be invited to the Michigan State Championship in Saginaw Valley.
Ecstatic from making it to states, the FEDS took on the statewide competition from April 12-15. Although the team started out the competition losing by thin margins, their robot’s strengths shined through when the 3rd place alliance captain chose them to compete in the final matches on their alliance. Placing 2nd place in their division and ranking 70th in the state, the FEDS earned an invitation to the World Robotics Championship in St. Louis from April 26-29.
On Wednesday, April 26, the FEDS departed to St. Louis, Missouri to compete in one of the two worldwide competitions held (the other one was in Houston, Texas). They competed in the most competitive division, as this division took home the win!
