RHS IN THE ROCHESTER PARADE
Rochester High School's Falcon Marching Band, Robotics Team, FEDS 201, and Rotary Interact Club were in the Rochester Parade on Sunday, December 3.
On Saturday, December 2, Rochester High School’s Falcon Marching Band, under the direction of Mr. David A. Uhrig, traveled to Sarnia, Ontario, to march in the Sarnia Kinsmen Christmas Parade of Lights. Members of the band decorated their instruments with battery-operated lights and holiday garlands. Each section of the band wore different festive holiday hats, and the sousaphones, decorated like giant reindeer, were a big hit. The band was presented with a plaque in appreciation of their participation, and in celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday. The next day, the Falcon Marching Band marched in the 65th Annual Rochester Hometown Christmas Parade. This is a special event for the band as it marks the last time the seniors march together. In keeping with tradition, the senior members of the band had time to share some parting words as they gathered in Rochester Municipal Park. Then, each senior was given a rose to toss in the pond to say farewell.
KEY CLUB FEEDS 11,664 PEOPLE
On December 5, members of Key Club held a food packaging event for Kids Against Hunger. We have saved for a couple of years and were able to purchase $2,000 in food to feed the hungry. The food came in bulk and included dry soy beans, veggies, protein powder and rice. We then created an assembly line to measure and package the food with each package containing a serving size to feed 6 people. In 50 minutes, about 60 Key Club members packaged 1,944 packages which equates to 11,664 meals for starving people. The meals were then loaded into a trailer. Marines from Selfridge will be picking the meals up on Saturday and will drive them to Miami. From Miami, another group of Marines will be flying this food to feed civilians in Puerto Rico. It was a joyous event and the students’ hearts were full. A big thank you goes to the Key Club members. They gave of their time to make a difference for many starving people. To Mr. Fox’s 6th hour PE class for help setting up, and Ms. Lori and Mr. Larry from Kids Against Hunger. We would like to hold this event yearly. If you’d like to make a donation in helping to raise another $2,000, please contact Jennifer O’Toole-Seyka, RHS Counseling. Or write a check to Rochester High Key Club and earmark Kids Against Hunger.
