SPOTLIGHT ON INSTRUCTION
|
Students in Mrs. Matthews' A.P. Government class are studying linkage institutions: the roles of political parties, media, and interest groups, and how they play in to our government. Students were given three current issue topics (the media’s coverage of the death of Fidel Castro, Midway Plastic Island, and Watergate). With the three issues, students discussed and determined the media is acting as a "gate keeper", a "score keeper", or a "watch dog", and the bias that exists. Mrs. Matthews' class drew their conclusions from articles, media, and class discussions.

WOMEN'S CHOIR SINGS AT DETROIT OPERA HOUSE
Rochester High School Women’s Choir was invited to the Detroit Opera House to sing the Waltz of the Snowflakes during a performance of The Nutcracker on Friday, November 25. The singers sat in the pit with the orchestra for the first act of the performance, then watched the second act from the audience. Singing with professional musicians was such a fantastic opportunity for our students!
RHS LIBRARY ARTICLE DATABASES
When searching for information on the web, RHS offers our students access to trustworthy, credible resources through subscription-based sites. These sites are online database collections of thousands of published magazines, journals, books, and news sources, both print and multimedia. Each one is provided by either RHS, the Library of Michigan’s Michigan eLibrary, or Rochester Hills Public Library and all are free to our students and families.
Whether your student has a homework assignment, research project, or essay that they’re needing background information for, encourage him or her to search one of the many databases that fits their subject before going to Google or Wikipedia to find reliable, quality information sources. Download a copy of the following page for the online location and password information, and keep it by the computer as a reminder to make it the first place to look!

GIRLS BRING HOME MEDAL FROM MHSAA STATE MEET
The Varsity Girls Swim Season wrapped up Saturday November 19 at Eastern Michigan at the MHSAA Division 2 Swim & Dive State Meet. State team included Raegan Wegener, Manuela Mura, Victoria Thor, Birttany Kim, Grace Forlines, Sophie Smythe and Kendall Jordan. All of our Lady Falcons made top 17 in the state, returning Saturday for finals, scoring enough points to place 14th overall of 38 teams competing! The girls brought home 13 State Medals overall. Victoria Thor led the team in points scored, and swam the sixth fastest time in the state in the individual 500 Freestyle, and also the sixth fastest time in the state in the individual 200 Freestyle - another broken school record of 1.55.37. Congratulations to our swimmers and to our coaches Paul Karas, Kathrina Steenson and Alycen Wiacek on a great 2016 season!
