RHS HOSTS INTERACT DAY

Picture
On November 11, the Interact club of Rochester High School hosted Interact Day, an annual conference for Interact Clubs from all over southeast Michigan and lower Ontario, Canada, to come together and share ideas, accomplishments, and plans, all in the name of service.
Interact Club is the high school offshoot of Rotary International, a service organization that makes a huge impact around the world.
Seventeen different schools from the area were in attendance, including the four RCS schools, ACE High School, Rochester High School, Rochester Adams High School, and Stoney Creek High School. At the event, clubs were also presented with Presidential Citations, the highest honor an Interact Club can receive for its volunteer work, for the 2016-17 school year. All four Rochester clubs received this award for going above and beyond in their service. The Rochester area strength was also displayed in the breakout sessions held: all four high schools along with Oakland University’s Rotaract Club presented and shared their invaluable ideas and accomplishments.
The theme for the day was Veterans’ Day: Service Above Self. The conference attendees celebrated Veterans' Day and honored Veterans by making thank you cards. The group collectively decided on care packages for Veterans as their Common Project for the year. It was a great learning experience for everyone.

“Interact Day was a great success. I am so proud of our officer team for doing such a wonderful job in planning, organizing, and hosting this year. The day went smoothly, and there was a lot of knowledge and information shared. Our hard work paid off, as everyone who attended the conference really enjoyed it and left inspired. We had great support from the Rochester Rotary Club. We could not have done this without the help of our advisor, Mrs. Kelly Messing-Mirabito, and Rochester Rotarian Mr. Wayne Hodges.”
-Zahra Ahmed, Rochester High Interact Club President

“It was amazing to see how everything we've been planning since last September finally came together in one successful day. It was a lot of work to plan- from creating agendas, getting presenters for breakout sessions, and finding someone to cater the event, but in the end it was all worth it. I feel like everyone learned a lot and everyone had a lot of fun being together and creating ideas to better our communities.”
-Keri Yang, Rochester High School Interact Club Treasurer

“Interact Day was a big success. Clubs from our district learned so much about each other’s work and gained ideas for our own clubs. We collectively found new ways to volunteer and improve our community.”
-Roshni Veeramachaneni, Rochester High Interact Club Liaison Officer

2017 RHS CAN DRIVE

APES FIELD TRIP

AP Environmental Science students went with Mr. Shurter on their annual Smiths Creek Landfill visit Tuesday. This is no ordinary landfill field trip, as students get to enjoy a state of the art education center and presentation from the landfill manager Matt Williams, a view through a glass wall into the engine room where DTE generates electricity using captured landfill gas, free Jimmy Johns lunch delivered for all provided by DTE, and a driving bus tour on and around the site. It was a beautiful sunny day and everything went great. If you see an APES student, ask them what they learned!

STUDENTS VOLUNTEER FOR BLESSINGS IN A BACKPACK

This week Mrs. Cosentino and several of our staff, students, families and alumni volunteered at Blessings in a Backpack.  Blessings In a Backpack is a “neighbor-helping-neighbor” program that is designed to help meet the nutritional needs of children and families.

Each week, volunteers, in cooperation with school officials, distribute backpacks filled with enough non-perishable food for the weekend (six meals) to “at-risk” students.  These students are participants in the government subsidized free or reduced fee hot lunch program.

The goal of the Blessings in a Backpack program is to keep these students from going hungry on the weekends and remove barriers to academic success.
Our local Rochester organization is led by Mrs. Kim Williams, a RHS parent.

NOVEMBER IS HEALTHY LIFESTYLES MONTH

Picture
PTAs nationwide are encouraging students and families to participate in healthy activities throughout the month as a way to kick off their year-long commitment to creating healthy and safe places for kids to learn and thrive.
How can we celebrate?  Get creative!  Make healthy living fun!  Some ideas include:
Issue a challenge each day of the week
  • Day 1: Drink 8 glasses of water!
  • Day 2: Walk 10,000 steps today!
  • Day 3: Eat a new vegetable today!
  • Day 4: Eat a new fruit today!
  • Day 5: Get 30 minutes of physical activity today!

Plan a healthy event for the whole family
  • Family walk after dinner
  • Cook a healthy meal together
  • Go to the park
  • Family trip to a farmers market
  • Discuss what it means to be healthy and set family goals

Here is a great YouTube video about Healthy Lifestyles:  “23 and ½ hours: What is the single best thing we can do for our health?”

Rochester High students Taehoon Song, Yoojin Bae, Jonathan Yoannides-Young and Ian Gebbie are members of Oakland Youth Orchestra (OYO).  They recently performed at the OYO Fall Concert at the Oxford Performing Arts Center in Oxford Michigan.  The evening’s program included Antonin Dvorak’s Slavonic Dance Op.46, No. 8 and Symphony No. 9 in E Minor, Opus 95.  Members of OYO come from across Oakland County.  They rehearse every week and have three performances per year.  The OYO is comprised of several different ensembles, and the RHS students pictured here are members of the Symphony Orchestra. The next performance will be on February 8, 2018, at the Oxford Performing Arts Center.

GIRLS SWIM AND DIVE MAKING THE HOLIDAYS SWEETER

Members of the Girls Swim and Dive Team wrapped up a season long commitment to Power Company Kids Club in Pontiac by making 200 Christmas treat bags last week.  After sponsoring and serving lunch to the PCKC leadership camp in July, the team was inspired to continue to help out the children who attend Power Company’s  programs by hosting a candy drive collecting extra Halloween candy. The result was  hundreds of pounds of candy!  The girls even surpassed their goal and only used up half the candy they collected creating the treat bags.  The rest of the candy will be delivered to a mass assembly day at PCKC on December 1 where the goal is to create 2,700 Christmas treat bags to be distributed to Pontiac and Detroit area missions.  Power Company Kids Club is a faith based program in Pontiac and Detroit that serves over 1,600 underprivileged and at risk children each week.

BOYS SWIM AND DIVE

The Boys Swim & Dive mandatory parent meeting will be held Monday, November 27 at 6:00 pm in the Community Room (new conference room over looking the football field). If a parent or guardian is unable to attend, please ask an adult to attend or share notes with you.
The first practice will be November 28 (must bring physical to participate).  All details regarding the season will be shared at the parent meeting.
