FMB AROUND TOWN

Last week, the Rochester Falcon Marching Band performed four times in five days, capping off an exciting marching season.
At the MSBOA District XVI Marching Band Festival, the FMB, under the direction of Mr. David A. Uhrig, received straight 1's (the highest score possible) in all three categories of music, marching and general effect showmanship. For the third year in a row, the band marched a flawless show in the pouring rain.
On Friday, the band entertained the crowd at the RHS Homecoming pep-rally.  Friday evening was Rochester’s homecoming football game, and would be the last time the band would perform its 2017 show, The Music of the Five Senses.  Friday was also the last time the Seniors would perform on the field. Several seniors had older siblings who had been in band as well, so their families were marking the end of an era.  In a testament to the tradition that is the Falcon Marching Band, over 40 alumni members of the band were on hand to march into the Rochester stadium and play The Fight Song, Alma Mater, and Star-Spangled Banner alongside current band members.
Sunday, the Falcon Marching Band played a Command Performance.  This annual fund-raiser supports band programs throughout the year. The winner is determined by a lottery, and this year, the Williamson family had the winning ticket. Though it was a blustery day on Sunday, the weather cleared in time for the band to march through the Williamson’s neighborhood and give a concert at their home.
The Falcon Marching Band will play at the Rochester High School Collage Concert next Wednesday.  On December 2nd, the entire band will travel to Sarnia, Ontario, to play in the Sarnia Parade of Lights. The following day, they will march in the annual Rochester Hometown Christmas Parade.
The Falcon Marching Band is grateful to the community of Rochester for all its support, and they hope to see you at the parade!

SOBER OCTOBER

Go sober for October! The month of October is designated as the month to refrain from and raise awareness of the dangers of alcohol.  Youth ages 12 – 20 drink 11% of all alcohol consumption in the United States. It is often consumed during an episode of binge drinking where teens consume large, and sometimes lethal, amounts. According to the Center for Disease Control, alcohol is responsible for more than 4,300 deaths among underage youth and over 200,000 emergency room visits per year.

Louis Buxton was a 17-year old young man who decided to go out partying with his friends.  After drinking two pints of vodka, he was no longer able to walk by himself and could barely communicate.  His friends decided to take him home to his parents. The family quickly put him to bed, positioning him on his stomach with his head slightly hanging off the edge in case he vomited in his sleep. Within minutes the teen was snoring.  At some point in the middle of the night, the snoring ceased.  The teen’s father went to check on him and found that his hands and body were cold and the teen was no longer breathing.  Louis was officially pronounced dead at the hospital at 4:26 am.

Alcohol poisoning results when excessive amounts of alcohol are consumed in a short period of time.  The body becomes overloaded with alcohol typically through a process of rapid drinking or binge drinking.  The alcohol reaches the blood stream and begins to take effect.  Alcohol is a depressant to the Central Nervous System and begins to suppress bodily functions.  The individual may become confused, start vomiting, the skin may become pale and they may fall into a stupor.  Once the alcohol reaches the brain stem, breathing decreases or may stop, heart rate decreases or may stop and the gag reflex becomes suppressed.  This can easily result in the individual’s vital functions decreasing to dangerous levels leading to coma or death.

Mayo Clinic reported that 90% of alcohol consumed by teenagers occurs during binge-drinking episodes.  High levels of consumption increase the risk for alcohol poisoning.  It is estimated that 2,200 deaths occur annually due to alcohol poisoning. If you are a teen, or a parent, and encounter a young person who has been drinking rapidly or binge drinking, don’t take any chances. Responsible individuals cannot rely on the “just sleep it off” adage.  Alcohol poisoning is a serious risk among youth.  Don’t fall into the trap of not wanting the teen or the family to be embarrassed by the teen’s behavior.  Take the youth to the emergency room of the nearest hospital.  You can save a life!
