CHINESE STUDENT EXCHANGE OCTOBER 2017
Rochester High School was fortunate enough to host some of the Chinese exchange students this October trip. RHS students learned about the culture and traditions of our sister school in China from the exchange students. A member of the administrative team also met with Mr. DeLuca and shared with him how the environment at RHS is above and beyond anything he imagined.
CELEBRATING THE CLASS OF 1967
Rochester High School was thrilled to host the graduates of the class of 1967 from September 28 - September 30 for their 50 year reunion! The events included the Varsity Football Game on Thursday night, a tour of the school by Mr. DeLuca on Friday night, and their reunion on Saturday night. Thank you to the class of 1967 for creating traditions RHS continues to enjoy! We are so proud of what it meant and still means to be a Falcon!

SOBER OCTOBER
Go sober for October! The month of October is designated as the month to refrain from and raise awareness of the dangers of alcohol. Youth ages 12 – 20 drink 11% of all alcohol consumption in the United States. It is often consumed during an episode of binge drinking where teens consume large, and sometimes lethal, amounts. According to the Center for Disease Control, alcohol is responsible for more than 4,300 deaths among underage youth and over 200,000 emergency room visits per year.
In the last few years, studies have identified that at least 10% of 8th graders and 35% of 12th graders report drinking alcohol in the last 30 days and 5% of 8th graders and 17% of 12th graders admit to binge drinking in the last 14 days. It is estimated that 1 in 10 students will drive under the influence of alcohol. Unfortunately, young drivers are 17 times more likely to die in a crash when alcohol is involved than when they haven’t been drinking. These statistics are alarming!
How to tell if your teen has been consuming alcohol:
Lowered inhibitions
Poor concentration
Slow reflexes
Slow reaction times
Reduced coordination
Sensations and perceptions that are unclear
Slurred speech
Slower brain activity
Sleepiness
Altered emotions
Poor vision
Increased urination
Breath and clothes smell like alcohol
Parents, don’t ignore the warning signs! Take action! If your teen is involved in drinking behaviors, set clear boundaries and social activities, closely monitor who they are with and where they are going, and give them an alcohol urinalysis test if you have suspicions. Also, there is no shame in seeking professional intervention if you feel it is necessary. Let’s all join the cause for Sober October!

COLLEGE VISITS
Colleges will be visiting RHS to speak with juniors and seniors about their requirements, scholarships, programs and admissions. This is a great opportunity to meet with the actual rep that often reviews college applications. Colleges are scheduling visits daily, so please check often. Sign up in the counseling office or on the counseling website.
SENIOR PARENTS: FAFSA INFO
Senior parents: FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) could be submitted starting October 1. Please be sure to go to FAFSA.ed.gov and submit. Monies, like grants with SSG (student scholarships and grants) and work study opportunities do run out. Also, students that meet college’s merit scholarships must complete FAFSA to get that money. Submit as early as possible but no later than March 1 to be considered for State money.
