NO SCHOOL MONDAY, MAY 28
There will be no school on Monday, May 28 due to Memorial Day.
SPOTLIGHT ON INSTRUCTION
On Thursday, May 17, Ms. Kay’s current issues class participated in a model United Nations (MUN) simulation on the topic of human rights. Ms. Kay teaches current issues and world history at Rochester High School, and she had her students partake in a formal debate with peers in a similar way the UN would. The purpose of this activity was for students to understand what MUN is, participate in a role play as UN delegates, deliver a speech, and engage in a debate with their peers. In preparation for this hands-on activity, students used Kagan and cooperative learning methods to research human rights violations in their assigned country and identify the impacts of these issues. They later came up with a solution to the issue of human rights using critical thinking strategies, and they delivered these solutions to the class during the student centered MUN simulation.

KEY CLUB UPDATE
Key Club has wrapped up its meetings for this year. We’ve had a pretty amazing year with over 60 students volunteering in the community with a minimum of 15 hours each. Our top earner, Nidhi Tigadi, had 44 hours of volunteerism, followed by Julia Hrynkiw with 37.5 hours and Abigail Kosnik with 37 hours. This year the Key Club members packaged over 10,000 meals for Kids Against Hunger, had presentations by Forgotten Harvest to learn about Food Insecurities and how to identify them, were taught basic self-defense training, made bird feeders that were placed around the school and finished with an ice cream sundae party. All students are welcome to join Key Club for the 2018-19 school year. Membership information will be available in September at the club fair. Don’t forget, there are volunteer opportunities over the summer throughout the community. Namely through Oakland County Parks and Music in the Park with Kiwanis Club. Please keep on volunteering. It feeds the soul!
