SPOTLIGHT ON INSTRUCTION
In Mrs. Miesch’s World Religions class this week, the Islamic Chaplain at the University of Michigan, Muhammad Ishtiaq, came in to discuss the Islamic religion with the class. In addition to giving a brief speech about Islam, Ishtaiq also answered any questions the students had regarding the religion. This was a unique opportunity for the students, who had just completed their unit on Islam, to have an hour long Q&A style discussion with a Muslim practitioner. It gives the students an opportunity they otherwise most likely would never have.

2018 NIGHT WITH THE STARS
VIDEO PRODUCTIONS STUDENTS WIN COMPETITION
Three RHS students won a statewide Public Service Announcement sponsored by Major League Baseball and the Detroit Tigers. Sam Altherr, Lyewon Kim and Reed Watson will be honored for winning "The Greatest Save" contest on the field at Comerica Park on May 30th before the Tigers play the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Their spot "Not only strangers are danger" beat out dozens of entries from around the state to win the contest. The win is the third in a row for Rochester High students, making the school the only one in the country to win three years in a row. The mission of Kindervision, which runs the contest, is to empower teens and children through peer to peer education to prevent sexual exploitation, abduction and human trafficking.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
KEY CLUB UPDATE
Key Club has wrapped up its meetings for this year. We’ve had a pretty amazing year with over 60 students volunteering in the community with a minimum of 15 hours each. Our top earner, Nidhi Tigadi, had 44 hours of volunteerism, followed by Julia Hrynkiw with 37.5 hours and Abigail Kosnik with 37 hours. This year the Key Club members packaged over 10,000 meals for Kids Against Hunger, had presentations by Forgotten Harvest to learn about Food Insecurities and how to identify them, were taught basic self-defense training, made bird feeders that were placed around the school and finished with an ice cream sundae party. All students are welcome to join Key Club for the 2018-19 school year. Membership information will be available in September at the club fair. Don’t forget, there are volunteer opportunities over the summer throughout the community. Namely through Oakland County Parks and Music in the Park with Kiwanis Club. Please keep on volunteering. It feeds the soul!

GIRLS LACROSSE TEAM RAISES $718
Saturday, May 5, the Girls Lacrosse Teams dedicated their Senior Day to raising funds for the Pontiac based non-profit, Power Company Kids Club. As a self supporting sport at RHS, the team requested donations in lieu of an entrance fee from both the home crowd and visiting Royal Oak. Families gave generously and often despite a scheduling error by the officials that resulted in the JV contest being cancelled shortly before game time. The team has collected juice boxes to donate to Power Company Kids Club for the last two years and this season wanted to do more to support the organization that aims at building future leaders and giving Pontiac youth growing up in poverty an opportunity to thrive. The Lady Falcons went on to beat Royal Oak 17-4. The Falcons graduate 8 Varsity players and 4 Junior Varsity players in 2018. Proud to Be a Lady Falcon!
RHS GIRLS GOLF
Parents, do you have a daughter who you would like to be involved in golf? High school golf is a great sport and often leads youngsters into something they can do the rest of their lives. One of the biggest misconceptions when it comes to high school golf is that girls need to have a lot of experience or be good players already in order to come out and make the high school team. Those ideas are definitely misconceptions, especially when it comes to jv girls golf. In a typical year, we will have several players on our jv team with very little experience coming into the season.
In an effort to get girls out playing golf, learning the game and preparing to try out in the fall, we have an opportunity for some group lessons with PGA Professional Larry Hamilton through the spring and summer. Larry has his own golf teaching facility in downtown Rochester and also works out of Twin Lakes. This is a great opportunity for young girls to get some golf instruction and do so in a group atmosphere. I personally have my daughter doing weekly lessons with Larry and would love to have more girls sign up to start working on their game.
If you are interested, go to www.larryhamiltongolf.com and click on “schedule a lesson”. Larry has group lessons set up so that you can go in and sign up. You can sign up individually or have friends sign up for the same time. I’m having my own daughter sign up each week in a group with a couple of friends. After coaching girls golf for 12 years, I’ve found that there’s a much better chance of getting girls to play when they have a friend that does as well.
There are many other golf professionals in the area that are great. I’ve known Larry for several years and he works with many young people in this area, so I’m comfortable recommending him. If you’d like any other information or have any questions about our golf program at RHS, please feel free to get in touch with me. Also, if you have a daughter that plans to come out for golf in the fall, please send me an email so I can put you on our email list. You can reach me at jhaney@rochester.k12.mi.us.
