SPOTLIGHT ON INSTRUCTION

Students in Mrs. Matthews’ AP U.S. Government and Politics have been learning about the Supreme Court, it’s functions, traditions and procedures.  Throughout this unit of study, students participated in a Moot Court (Mock Supreme Court), nine justices were nominated and confirmed from the class, justices used the Rule of Four to select the docket.  Each hour, the justices selected 2 cases for oral arguments.  Cases included:  Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission, Heien v North Carolina, and National Institute of Family and Life Advocates v Becerra.  Supreme Court Justices created constitutional and legal questions to ask to students who performed as a legal team arguing for 30 minutes for either the petitioner or respondent.  The justices then met in private to vote and prepare the majority and dissenting opinions.  Students did a wonderful job!
To wrap up the unit and get in the spirit of March Madness, students created a 44-team bracket.  Pitting 44 landmark supreme court cases they learned in October.  Students were asked to reflect and evaluate the significance of each case, and determine the National Champion of Supreme Court Cases.  So far, Marbury v Madison and US v Nixon have been bracket favorites!

Picture
Congratulations to Samuel Schroeder and Lincoln Balmer for winning National Scholastics Art and Writing Awards. Last winter, students from across the country and places abroad submitted nearly 350,000 works of art and writing to the 2018 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. Almost 19,600 works earned regional Gold Keys and advanced to national adjudication in NYC. Of those Gold Key works, just 3,259 received National Medals. Samuel and Lincolns work are part of the top 1% of art pieces submitted to the 2018 Scholastic Awards! We are so proud to have two national winners this year. Samuel won a National GOLD KEY for his photograph “Happy Meal” , and Lincoln won national SILVER KEY in the competition, for his piece title “Between Us”. Gold key work will be shipped and put on display at Carnegie Hall in New York city. The National Ceremony will take place at Carnegie Hall on Thursday, June 7th. As part of winning national awards the young artists received scholarship money from the art college they will be attending in the fall. Lincoln Balmer will attend Savannah College of Art and Design and Samuel Schroeder will be attending the College for Creative Studies.

PRACTICAL LAW PRESENTERS

Over the past few weeks Practical Law classes have had the opportunity to hear engaging presentations from FBI Special Agents, a US Air Marshal, and from Oakland County Sergeant John Ashley, our former school liaison officer. These presentations give students insight into each of their law enforcement careers, learning about their individual journey into each field and exciting stories on the job. During the presentation students have the opportunity to ask questions and get feedback. Earlier this semester students also heard presentations from Deputy Curtis, our school liaison officer, as well as Deputy Batzloff on Crash Reconstruction and the dangers of drinking & driving and texting & driving.

ATTENTION SENIORS: HONORS CONVOCATION MAILING

Senior parents please be on the lookout when you return from spring break for our Honors Convocation mailing. The documents enclosed will need to be returned to the counseling office.

Seeking to escape the demands of life in London, Pam Fitzgerald and her brother, Roddy, an aspiring playwright, discover a charming house in the west of England, overlooking the Irish Sea. The house, Cliff End, has long been empty, and they are able to purchase it at a suspiciously low price. The reason is soon apparent: The house has an unsavory reputation. Fifteen years earlier a murder may or may not have occurred by the gnarled tree that can be viewed from the parlor window. Slowly the Fitzgeralds begin to sense the evil spirit that still inhabits the house.  Soon visits from the village doctor, the local gossip, and a former governess, reveal stories of the beautiful Mary Meredith, who once lived in the house and of the striking, Carmel, who posed for a painting that led to her destruction. With the help of Mary's daughter, Stella, and a séance arranged by an actress friend of the Fitzgeralds, Cliff End is forced to reveal its dark secrets.

GIRLS GOLF LESSON OPPORTUNITY

Parents, do you have a daughter who you would like to be involved in golf?  High school golf is a great sport and often leads youngsters into something they can do the rest of their lives.  One of the biggest misconceptions when it comes to high school golf is that girls need to have a lot of experience or be good players already in order to come out and make the high school team.  Those ideas are definitely misconceptions, especially when it comes to jv girls golf.  In a typical year, we will have several players on our jv team with very little experience coming into the season.

When it comes to making the varsity team, although our team has been very good over the last 15 years, we would most likely take any girl that can break 100 for 18 holes straight to the varsity team.  In an effort to get girls out playing golf, learning the game and preparing to try out in the fall, we have an opportunity for some group lessons with PGA Professional Larry Hamilton through the spring and summer.  Larry has his own golf teaching facility in downtown Rochester and also works out of Twin Lakes.  This is a great opportunity for young girls (current 5th graders and up) to get some golf instruction without having to commit to the expense of individual lessons yet.

We have some good young players who will be coming up through Rochester High in the next few years and we'd really like to keep building in order to make another State Championship run in the next several years!  If you have a daughter who would be interested in attending some group lessons, please contact our Girls Varsity Coach, Jeff Haney at jhaney@rochester.k12.mi.us.  We would like to start lessons soon after spring break and have them run through the end of the school year.  For those who want to continue after that, Larry will also be running lessons throughout the summer as well.  Larry will be setting up times each week that people can sign up for and I will put you in touch with him to do that.  There are other good professionals in the area as well that would be great to work with.  Please get in touch and we'll help in any way we can.  We are very excited about getting young girls involved in the game of golf and hope your daughter can join in.
