SPOTLIGHT ON INSTRUCTION
Mrs. Slomka teaches Anatomy and Physiology, Microbiology/Genetics, and Biology at RHS. On March 21, her students in Anatomy and Physiology began a week-long Blood Analysis Lab using real dog's blood from local veterinary clinics.
Lab procedures include identifying blood differential counts (counting white blood cells after making a blood smear), hematocrit/packed cell count (using capillary tubes and a centrifuge to separate plasma and cells), enumeration counts (diluting blood to count the amount of red blood cells or white bloods on a special slide called a hemocytometer), hemoglobin estimation (comparing blood color to a Tallquist chart) and sketching Heme Crystals.
Mrs. Slomka used an intro essay for students to explore the topic before they begin this new unit. They already took notes on blood, so the lab was an incredible hands-on opportunity to do real scientific and diagnostic analysis in a laboratory setting in order to deepen learning.

RCS VAPING PRESENTATION
2018 HOMETOWN HUSTLE
ROCHESTER ALLIANCE OF THEATRICAL STUDENTS PROUDLY PRESENETS:
THE UNINVITED

April 19-21, 2018
Rochester High School Auditorium
Tickets are general admission
$8.00 for Student/Seniors
$10.00 for Adults
$5.00 Saturday Matinee, All seats
Seeking to escape the demands of life in London, Pam Fitzgerald and her brother, Roddy, an aspiring playwright, discover a charming house in the west of England, overlooking the Irish Sea. The house, Cliff End, has long been empty, and they are able to purchase it at a suspiciously low price. The reason is soon apparent: The house has an unsavory reputation. Fifteen years earlier a murder may or may not have occurred by the gnarled tree that can be viewed from the parlor window. Slowly the Fitzgeralds begin to sense the evil spirit that still inhabits the house. Soon visits from the village doctor, the local gossip, and a former governess, reveal stories of the beautiful Mary Meredith, who once lived in the house and of the striking, Carmel, who posed for a painting that led to her destruction. With the help of Mary's daughter, Stella, and a séance arranged by an actress friend of the Fitzgeralds, Cliff End is forced to reveal its dark secrets.
Buy your tickets at the door or online at http://bit.ly/RATStix.

RHS TEACHERS AT TEACH TO LEAD SUMMIT
The Business Department of RHS was honored to be invited to the Teach to Lead Summit in Novi on Monday, March 12. Mrs. Karen Malsbury and Mrs. Kristin Dunneback, prior to the event, submitted a proposal to explore the notion of providing all seniors at RHS an Authentic Career Learning Experience.
This day of collaboration and introspection was priceless. Our team was able to present our plans to Governor Snyder who encouraged us to not just expose our senior class to this opportunity but to open it up to our juniors. The Director of Talent and Economic Development, Mr. Roger Curtis supported our ideas with hard evidence from the Marshall Plan. (see below for more details) We were able to utilize the Logic Model and come up with a compelling Goal to share with all stakeholders in the near future. The plan is to offer a Authentic Career Learning Experience to all seniors in the 2018-2019 school year.

RHS SPORTS
GIRLS GOLF LESSON OPPORTUNITY
Parents, do you have a daughter who you would like to be involved in golf? High school golf is a great sport and often leads youngsters into something they can do the rest of their lives. One of the biggest misconceptions when it comes to high school golf is that girls need to have a lot of experience or be good players already in order to come out and make the high school team. Those ideas are definitely misconceptions, especially when it comes to jv girls golf. In a typical year, we will have several players on our jv team with very little experience coming into the season.
When it comes to making the varsity team, although our team has been very good over the last 15 years, we would most likely take any girl that can break 100 for 18 holes straight to the varsity team. In an effort to get girls out playing golf, learning the game and preparing to try out in the fall, we have an opportunity for some group lessons with PGA Professional Larry Hamilton through the spring and summer. Larry has his own golf teaching facility in downtown Rochester and also works out of Twin Lakes. This is a great opportunity for young girls (current 5th graders and up) to get some golf instruction without having to commit to the expense of individual lessons yet.
We have some good young players who will be coming up through Rochester High in the next few years and we'd really like to keep building in order to make another State Championship run in the next several years! If you have a daughter who would be interested in attending some group lessons, please contact our Girls Varsity Coach, Jeff Haney at jhaney@rochester.k12.mi.us. We would like to start lessons soon after spring break and have them run through the end of the school year. For those who want to continue after that, Larry will also be running lessons throughout the summer as well. Larry will be setting up times each week that people can sign up for and I will put you in touch with him to do that. There are other good professionals in the area as well that would be great to work with. Please get in touch and we'll help in any way we can. We are very excited about getting young girls involved in the game of golf and hope your daughter can join in.
