CHEER TEAM STATE CHAMPIONS

Picture
Picture
They say great programs don’t rebuild, they reload, and that’s exactly what Rochester did this season. After going undefeated last season and capturing their 18th total state championship, the Falcons knew they had their work cut out for them. This seasons team would be very young compared to last year’s, but they were up for the challenge. Led by a strong senior class consisting of Zy Turner, Hope Fryer, Sam Ellison, Megan McMurray, Sydney Asuncion, Morgan Libby, Adriana Nikaj, and Mattea Sykes, Rochester set their sites on state title number nineteen. Rochester started the season by winning the first OAA Red competition of the season, and then saw a few struggles that come with having a young team. However, Rochester would find their way in early February, and would go onto win 5 straight competitions before heading to the state finals. Rochester would win the Lake Orion Invitational, the OAA Red Cahmpionship, the Delta Plex Inviational, and both District and Regional titles. On Friday it was all on the table, and Rochester never flinched. The Falcons won round one with a first round score of 236.5, which placed them ahead of Stevenson and powerhouse Grandville. In the second round Rochester would again lead all scorers with a 231, and the third round saw the Falcons achieve a wire-to-wire lead to finish with a final score of 789.02. This is Rochester’s 14th MHSAA State Championship, and 19th overall. Rochester wins their first back-to-back state title since 2007.

BOYS SWIM AND DIVE TO STATES

Picture
Six Rochester Boys swimmers will be making the trip to Eastern Michigan University this weekend to compete at the State Swim Meet. The 200 yard medley team consisting of Ian Green, Peter Corsetti, Issac Steenson, and Hamza Kaakarli will look to bring home a relay title for the Falcons. Peter Corsetti was a 200 and 500 free winner at the OAA Championships earlier in the season. Senior captain Hamaza Kaakarli said, “If you would have asked me in the beginning of the season if this would have been possible I would have laughed, but I really dedicated myself this year and knew if I worked hard I had a shot to help a relay team make it to state”. When asked about his fellow teammates Hamza said, “Pete, Ian and Issac are year-round swimmers. They work so hard and often swim doubles everyday. They deserve this and I couldn’t be more proud”. Also competing in the state meet are two divers for Rochester. Griffith Losh and Ryan Maloney both qualified at the regional meet last week, and look to make a run at the state diving title.

VARSITY BRANDS SCHOOL SPIRIT AWARDED TO MR. BEACH

Picture
Varsity Brands School Spirit Awards celebrates the very best of America’s high schools with 23 categories recognizing Schools, Staff, and Students. “Varsity Brands is committed to recognizing the unsung heroes in our school communities,” said Jeff Webb, Founder and Chairman of Varsity Brands. “There is a powerful connection between school spirit, involvement, achievement and self-confidence. With the School Spirit Awards, we hope to shine a spotlight on those making a difference every day in schools across America.”
In the staff awards category, Mr. Luke Beach was selected one of four finalists for the “Outstanding Athletic Director Award”. Mr. Beach was selected one of just four athletic directors, out of several thousands that were nominated.
“I was very happy to hear that Mr. Beach was recognized for all his hard work” said Rochester Varsity Boys Basketball coach John Pleasant. Pleasant also added, “Mr. Beach works very hard to further the educational experience for all student-athletes at RHS. More than anything, Mr. Beach values relationships with both student-athletes and his coaches. Mr. Beach has done a great job fostering and developing positive relationships with the RHS athletic community during his time as athletic director”. Mr. Beach joined Rochester High School as the interim Athletic Director in Winter 2013, after serving as the assistant Athletic Director during the previous year at Oxford High School.  2016-2017 marks his fifth year as an Interscholastic Athletic Administrator, and his fourth year in that capacity at Rochester.
