SPOTLIGHT ON INSTRUCTION
|
Mr. Lewis’ Woods class observed and took notes identifying infeed/outfeed tables, size of the cutter head, guards, fence, and all other parts associated with the jointer. They learned how to safely set-up, adjust, and check the jointer before using. While discussing proper operating procedures, students also got a demonstration on what could go wrong if they do not follow the safe operating procedures. Students are learning the six steps to squaring a board and discuss why it is important to start with a square board on their project. Students will then apply and demonstrate skills before they start working on individual projects.

FEDS 201
The FEDS have finished designing, constructing, and programming the robot in preparation for their upcoming Steamworks competitions, and are gearing up to go head-to-head against 40+ other teams!
The past six weeks of the Build Season have been a challenge for the FEDS. When it came to conquering the task of storing balls in the robot, they ran into an issue. The balls would not self orient, and thus an agitation system was needed. The FEDS struggled to develop a solution with the proper materials, orientation, and packaging. With the Stop Build Day quickly approaching, they found the right balance to push through. Upon reaching the floor to practice, the team became aware of the dire need for a strong autonomous function. In their final moments of practice, with hours to spare, an autonomous was developed, tested, and completed. The FEDS are on their way! Full steam ahead!
Come join us at Centerline High School on March 10-11 and at Parker Middle School on March 31-April 1!

These five students placed among the top 15,000 in the nation and will now have the opportunity to be named a National Merit Scholar. RHS STAFF ATTENDS MINDFULNESS CLASS
Six teachers/counselors from Rochester High School; Amy Cosentino, Catey Gittner, Christopher Green, Stephanie Miller, Jen O'Toole- Seyka and Claire Scislowicz all attended two after school program sessions in Mindfulness. The program was taught by OU professor Dr. Caryn Wells. Mindfulness is being taught in schools across the county. Teachers/counselors learn to help students acquire stillness, focus tension, and learn a type of kindness that promotes harmony in the classroom. With the generosity of our Rochester District PTA Council, a copy of Dr. Wells book was purchased for each participant.
EMANCIPATION AND ITS LEGACIES EXHIBITION AT RHS
The Rochester High School in association with the National Social Studies Honor Society will host Emancipation and Its Legacies, a nation traveling exhibition on display from February 8, 2017 to March 8, 2017. Developed by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History in partnership with the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, Emancipation and Its Legacies marks the sesquicentennial of President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. Drawing on letters, personal accounts, images, and other documents from the Gilder Lehrman Collection, each section traces the major events that led to emancipation.
“We are pleased to have been selected as a site for this exhibition,” said Chad Zwolinski, Rochester High School. “Through reproductions of documents, photographs, and posters, the exhibition invites visitors to learn about emancipation through the eyes of individuals. Though Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation one hundred and fifty years ago, people today can still identify with the dreams and hopes of the people freed by that document, and the promise it held for them. We hope that this exhibition will help visitors better understand the human history and legacy of freedom and emancipation.”

ROCHESTER CHEER DISTRICT CHAMPS
The Rochester cheer team officially begins the defense of their state championship, and it couldn’t have gone better for the Falcons on Saturday. Rochester scored a record high 788 to bring home the district title while Rochester Adams and Stoney Creek finished 2nd and 3rd respectfully. Rochester will advance to the regional next Saturday at Athens High School, where the competition will host four of the top five teams in the state.
COACH IN THE SPOTLIGHT - ERIC VERNON
Each month the Rochester Athletic Department recognizes a coach who goes above and beyond to give our student-athletes a great experience. This month’s coach is head football coach and varsity wrestling interim head coach Eric Vernon. Coach Vernon has been at the helm of the football program for going on a decade, and has also assisted late wrestling coach Frank Lafferty for eleven years. Coach Vernon has dedicated countless hours to meeting the needs of our student-athletes not only on the football filed or wrestling mat, but in the weight-room as well. Coach Vernon has been a driving force behind the effort to properly train our student-athletes through strength and conditioning. He also has given his time serving others by stressing the importance of community service. The past three years Vernon’s athletes, along with Captains Club members, have served the Rochester community by volunteering for the Hometown Hustle. Coach Vernon also helped to develop a “Mothers Clinic”, which helps educated student-athletes mothers about the game of football, and give them a day that would mimic the experience of their son’s.
“You’d be hard-pressed to find someone who puts more time into their craft,” said Rochester Athletic Director Luke Beach. “You can routinely find coach Vernon here on a weekend during the season, always trying to make sure his student-athletes are well prepared,” Beach said. “Coach is a quite guy by nature, but once you get to know him, he has a big heart, and you see how much he cares about our kids,” Beach added.

PAIR NAMED REGIONAL WRESTLING COACH OF THE YEAR
Late coach Frank Lafferty was just named the 2016-17 Regional Coach of the Year, along with assistant Cody Devoe, who was named the 2016-17 Regional Assistant Coach of the Year. Lafferty had a decorated career that featured a run to the state semi-finals in 2013-14, and three straight district titles during that stretch. One of Lafferty’s former wrestling stars at Rochester was Cody Devoe. Devoe, now in his third year as a varsity assistant at Rochester, has been an outstanding addition to the staff, and has now been recognized for his efforts.
GOLF TRYOUTS
Boys Golf Tryouts are coming up soon! High school golf is a great sport! The boys will get to play a lot of free golf on some very nice courses, increase their knowledge on the rules of golf, and increase their skills while having a lot of fun.
Tryouts will start the week of March 13. Our coaching staff will be changing a little bit this year. Coach Haney (our girl's varsity coach) will remain as JV coach, but after long-time varsity coach Paul Marti's retirement at the end of last season, we will have a new varsity coach. Our new varsity coach is Vance Kirkwood and he is excited to move into our program and work with the great group of guys we have returning as well as the newcomers we hope to have join us this year.
There are a couple of important pieces of information everyone needs to know as we gear up for the start of golf season. We will be having an important informational meeting next Tuesday, February 28 in room D-115 right after school for all those planning to try out. The guys will get to meet Coach Kirkwood as well as get information about upcoming tryouts. Typically, the first couple weeks of the season (barring unusually nice weather that allows us to get outside) consists of going to the golf dome 3-4 times per week to hit balls. As soon as we are able, we will get outside and start playing. Remember, you must have a physical to try out, so please get that taken care of before March 13.
If you have any questions prior to the meeting next Tuesday, please contact Coach Kirkwood (kirkwo14@gmail.com) or Coach Haney (jhaney89@hotmail.com). We look forward to seeing everyone there!
