EXCITING OPPORTUNITY TO HOST A CHINESE STUDENT FOR 4 NIGHTS FROM FEBRUARY 13-17!

Rochester High School will be hosting 25 tenth grade students from Jiangsu Province in China and is looking for host families from February 13-17 (four nights).  This is an incredible opportunity for a family to form new friendships and expand cultural horizons.  We are in need of loving homes in which one or two Chinese students will be provided their own bed as well as a few meals.

The students, from Hai’an High School, are excited to come to the United States and experience American family traditions and customs for these few days.  RHS hosted Hai’an High School last year and each one of their students felt that the homestay portion was an important part of their experience.  The host families also commented on how transformational the experience was.

As a token of appreciation, we will be awarding a $50 gift certificate to the Rochester High School Falcon’s Nest Spirit Wear store to each family.  So, show your Falcon Pride by volunteering to host a Chinese exchange student from February 13-17.

For more information, please contact assistant principal, Casey Wescott at cwescott@rochester.k12.mi.us

SPOTLIGHT ON INSTRUCTION

This is the 4th Annual Shark Tank RHS hosted by Ms. Malsbury. It is an opportunity for students to showcase their entrepreneurial idea in front a bunch of business owners and potential investors from in and around the Rochester community.  To be part of shark tank students write a business plan in the Small business and entrepreneurial class, however it is apparent that many students draw upon previous knowledge and experience they have explored in other business classes and communications classes at RHS.
Many of the sharks make significant donations in the form of gift certificates, internships, sponsorship and all expenses paid entrepreneurial camps. People were very generous. The students individually or in a partnership present their idea and then answer questions on the spot. This is then followed up with a series of negotiations and ultimately an offer. The atmosphere in the room is electric with banter, advice and assurances.
Every year Ms. Malsbury's students totally exceed her expectations and give her the desire to keep instilling value in what the business department is providing for our students.  A big thank you to Chris Guyor for his help with the video production, Kristin Dunneback with location support in the school store.

HOSA AT REGION 9 CONFERENCE

Picture
On January 13, 2018 the Rochester High School HOSA club successfully competed at the Michigan Health and Occupational Students of America Region 9 Conference at Oakland University. Forty-seven students from Rochester High School advanced to the state competition that will take place on March 22nd and 23rd 2018 in Grand Rapids, MI. Six students took first place, six students took second, and eight students took third at regionals. Ms. Shooks and Rochester’s HOSA Officers are very proud of our clubs' accomplishments and are looking forward to placing at States so the team can represent Rochester at the National Competition.

The following students placed first in the competition: Kathleen Jabas and Mira Vacharakajorn (Community Awareness), Zoya Ahmed (Extemporaneous Writing), Yash Kumar, Alexander Lee, and Jongbu Park (Medical Innovation).  Haadi Fayyaz (Dental Science), Kunal Bhatia (Job Seeking Skills), Rhea Gupta and Amala Nayak (Nutrition), Nathan Nakkapalli and Aditya Nisankararao (Public Health), and Bhavya (Researched Persuasive Writing and Speaking) all placed second.  Rami Sbahi (Dental Terminology), Viktor Tyberkevycm (Medical Terminology), Amna Abbas, Emily Jinerson, and Tavie Valdez (Public Service Announcement), and Laura Eshelman, Fatima Uddin, and Noor Yousif (Public Health) all placed third.  The following students are moving on to the state competition as well: Mihai-Adrian Bulmeza, Pranav RajaramBalajiSuba, Mia Espedido, Emily Nguyen, Ali Ibrahim, Afrah Ansari, Osayd Bahauddin, Justin Baker, Delna Sholapurwalla, Nidhi Tigadi, Prem Patel, Kishan Shah, Saloni Gupta, Grace Liu, Shravya Ramesh, Ishita Shukla, Daphne Agapios, Jasen Karam, Sana Halim, Hera Akmal, Fahro Cejvanovic, Maria Fernanda Lopez-Bermajo, Julia Mleczek, Noora Neiroukh, Neha Gopalakrishnan, and Kethan Gudi.

ATTENDANCE INCENTIVE

Dear Parents and Guardians:

As you are aware, the district Attendance Committee has developed a provisional incentive program to promote consistent, daily attendance. First semester attendance data has shown a dramatic decrease in the total number of student absences and tardies.

Students may choose to opt out of their first semester final exams if they meet the following criteria:
¨ No more than three absences in any class first semester
¨ No first semester suspensions Students must also meet one of the following academic criteria:
¨ Minimum grade of 77% in the class, OR ¨ Minimum grade of 65% AND no missing assignments or assessments in the class.

Teachers will be notifying students on Wednesday, January 17th regarding their status for final exams. (Additional absences beyond this date could change the qualification status.)

Points of Clarification:
1. Students who qualify for the final exam incentive will still have the option of taking the final exam. The grade will be calculated into the semester grade if it improves the final grade. These students will not have their grades lowered if they choose to take the exam.
2. The minimum grade criterion (77% in the class, or 65% and no missing assignments) must be fulfilled within five school days prior to the end of the semester or as directed by the teacher.
3. Disqualification due to suspension can take place up to and including exam days.
4. Absences for school business, such as field trips, athletic absences, or RCS testing, will not count toward the three absences. All other absences are counted the same.
5. Every three tardies equal one absence.
6. Students can review their absences on Synergy StudentVUE. If students reached four absences or more in any one class they do not qualify for the incentive in any class.
7. Students who are scheduled to take the final exam and do not complete the final exam will receive an E. There is no make-up exam.
8.  Students who are in school during the scheduled exam time will take the exam.  They are not free to go to a different area.

Example Situations:
Example #1: Student has an 80% in all classes, two absences and a five-day suspension. Qualification: Student does not qualify for the exam incentive.
Example #2: Student has 80% in all classes, two absences in hours 1-5 and four absences in 6th hour. Qualification: The student does not qualify for exam incentive.
Example #3: Student has 80% in all classes hours 1-5, and 65% with three missing assignments in 6th hour, and three absences in all classes. Qualification: The student qualifies for exam incentive in hours 1-5 but not in 6th.
Example #4: Student has 80% in all classes and four absences due to family vacation.  Qualification:  Student does not qualify for the exam incentive.

REGION 4 BPA GIVES BACK

Four hundred Business Professional of America students (50 from Rochester High School), from 15 different schools in Region 4, competed and gave back in the 2018 Regional Competition at Baker College in Auburn Hills.  During a day of computerized tests, team events, individual presentations and networking the students were able to give back in a bunch of charitable break out activities.   One hundred and fifty-six care packages and valentines treats were made for Blessings in Backpack, nine fleece blankets were hand tied for children’s Hospital, too many to count, dog toys were made for the humane society, over seventy letters were written to serving Military, over one hundred book marks were made for kindergarten students, one hundred and thirty two valentine candy jars were made for seniors in assisted living and to top it all off, over 1300 books were donated to Little Free Library around metro Detroit.  We thank all of the donors and facilitators that made this charitable donation possible to the Region 4 community and the student willingness to spare an hour of their time to make this mission possible.
